Malky Mackay has approached Birmingham City's Che Adams and Leicester's Harvey Barnes to play for Scotland, Sky Sports News understands.

Both players have been capped by England's U20s but qualify to play for Scotland under the grandparent rule.

The Scotland interim boss is reportedly keen on recruiting as many qualified players as possible.

Mackay recently tried to call-up Manchester United youngster Scott McTominay to the squad for Scotland's friendly against the Netherlands but the 20-year-old midfielder turned down the offer.

Mackay named eight uncapped players in his squad for Thursday's 1-0 defeat to the Netherlands and admitted before the game that the national team needs to look at every possible avenue for new players.

"Attention to detail is everything," Mackay said.

"Our talent ID base is very small and we've got to look far and wide, and at least ask the questions of the players we think have the ability to play at the top level."

Mackay took caretaker charge of the national team after Gordon Strachan lost his job last month, but the Scottish Football Association's chief executive Stewart Regan has ruled Mackay out of the running for taking the role on permanently.

The former Cardiff manager will return to his position as SFA performance director after a new appointment is announced.
