Brighton's Steve Sidwell scored from close to the halfway line to open the scoring against Bristol City

Steve Sidwell scored a screamer of a goal during the first half of Brighton's 2-0 win at Bristol City on Saturday, netting nearly from the half-way line.

The Seagulls were in Sky Bet Championship action at Ashton Gate, and it was the former Stoke and Chelsea midfielder who opened the scoring in stunning fashion as the clocked ticked to the 13th minute.

Korey Smith was unable to keep the ball in the middle of the park and allowed Sidwell to nick in and take a few strides forward before firing from just inside the Robins' half.

His effort caught goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell off-guard as he attempted to scramble back to make a save, but it was no use as the midfielder's 50-yard hit found its way into the back of the net.

Sidwell's celebration was also poignant as he raced towards the Brighton box with his team-mates before they all lifted up the shirt of Anthony Knockaert who was absent after the death of his father earlier this week.
