Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino confirms there is no change on Virgil van Djik's status

Mauricio Pellegrino has confirmed Virgil van Dijk's status as a Southampton player remains unchanged, and the defender will play no part in Saturday's game with West Ham.

Van Dijk has been the subject of much transfer speculation this summer, with Liverpool pursuing a deal before dropping interest after Southampton reported them to the Premier League for an alleged illegal approach.

Sky Sports News understands Chelsea and Manchester City are also targeting the defender, who submitted a transfer request at St Mary's on August 7, though Southampton maintain he is not for sale.

"Nothing has changed - it is the same as last week," Pellegrino said speaking prior to Saturday's game at home to West Ham.

"For that reason, I have nothing to say, he won't be available to play."

Southampton's uncertainty over the 26-year old's future has forced them to consider potential replacements, and Sky sources reported on Wednesday the Saints are in talks to sign Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt.

The Netherlands international has impressed for the Serie A side since moving from AZ Alkmaar in 2015, scoring three goals in 21 appearances last season.
