Manchester City were dumped out of the FA Youth Cup on Thursday after a penalty shoot-out defeat at Plymouth.
The club's senior team may be riding high in the Premier League having won a record 15 games in a row but their next generation of stars had to settle for second best at Home Park.
City boasted the talents of England and Spain's U17 captains but lost out on penalties after the match ended 0-0 following the 90 minutes plus extra-time.
England U17 World Cup winning goalkeeper Curtis Anderson was unable to save the decisive Michael Peck spot-kick, after Plymouth's Michael Cooper had kept out Ian Carlo Poveda-Ocampo.
Cooper excelled over 120 minutes to keep a clean sheet against a side that included Joel Latibeaudiere, who captained England to their World Cup victory in India in October, and Eric Garcia Martret who captained Spain in the final.
City have lost in the final of the competition to Chelsea for three years running.
Plymouth are seventh in the EFL Youth Alliance Southwest Division, while City are top of the Northern section of the Premier Academy League.
Plymouth will now be at home to Burnley in the fourth round.
Argyle Academy head Kevin Hodges said: "I am so proud. We managed to see it through to extra-time, when there were some weary legs and weary minds, but we managed to see the game through.
"I don't think the boys will understand until a few days time what they have actually achieved"
