Brighton captain Dale Stephens believes Mo Diame's equaliser against the Seagulls on Tuesday was "fortuitous".

Newcastle fought back to win their top of the table clash with Brighton after a fortunate finish from Mo Diame levelled the score

Newcastle's 81st-minute equaliser came as a result of a freak goal from Diame, who he flicked a wayward Christian Atsu shot over a crowded penalty area and into the net.

And Stephens felt the goal was a fortunate one and changed the game completely.

"It was a very fortuitous goal," Stephens told Sky Sports' EFL Weekly Podcast.

"It came against the run of play. We had a good control of the game at the time and it's probably knocked the stuffing out of us a little bit. It went into a frenzy after that and we gave away a penalty in the meantime.

"We played well enough on the night to get something out of the game but we move swiftly on to the game on Saturday now."

Despite the setback, Stephens is confident Brighton can still get promoted this season even if they ended up dropping into the play-off places.

"Ultimately the aim for this season is to go up and get promotion," he said.

"Whether that will be as champions or second place I'm not sure too many people will argue which position we do it in.

"It's about picking up the most points as soon as we can and to take it one game at a time and tick them off."
