Tony Cottee says that Sam Allardyce is exactly the manager Everton need to guarantee the club's Premier League survival.
Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has held discussions with Allardyce about the vacant manager's position, Sky Sports News understands, while a top European coach and a Premier League manager are also in the running.
But Cottee, who spent six productive seasons at Goodison Park until re-joining West Ham in 1994, says Allardyce would be the ideal replacement for Ronald Koeman.
He told Premier League Daily: "They need someone to steady the ship, they've got a problem in scoring goals. They need a safe pair of hands and in Sam Allardyce they've got someone that fits the bill.
"He goes back to basics. He does it very well and he will keep Everton in the league.
"They're certainly in big trouble but the win against Watford was massive, especially after being 2-0 down. Will they get relegated? No, I don't think they will.
"Hopefully, Sam has got over the experience that happened when he was England manager. He's kept involved with football, he's been watching all the games and he will be ready to go. He will be a very, very good appointment for Everton.
"If he does take it, he will want some stability. I don't really get the six-month contract situation. I would say give him two-and-a-half or a three-year contract, whatever he wants."
