Phil Jones will miss next week's Champions League opener after Manchester United withdrew an appeal against his ban.

The England centre-half was suspended for two games for a run-in with an anti-doping official in the wake of May's Europa League final.

Jones served the first game of his ban when United lost to Real Madrid in the Super Cup at the start of August.

And United have now ditched an appeal, ruling out the defender for next Tuesday's Group A game against Basel at Old Trafford.
