Ashley Cole was sent off in the 18th minute of LA Galaxy's 2-0 defeat to Columbus Crew after fouling Pedro Miguel Martins Santos

Ashley Cole was shown a straight red card for a last-ditch lunge on Columbus Crew forward Pedro Miguel Martins Santos on Wednesday.

The former England, Chelsea and Arsenal defender was given his marching orders with just 18 minutes on the clock at the Mapfre Stadium after cynically bringing Santos down as he raced through on goal.

Cole and his LA Galaxy team-mates protested against the referee's decision, but the call was upheld several minutes later after VAR (video assistant referee) was consulted by the officials.

It proved to be a costly error from Cole as his Galaxy side, who he was captaining, slipped to a 2-0 defeat in Ohio.

Goals from Ola Kamara and Justin Meram inflicted an eighth loss out of nine games for Galaxy, who sit just a point off the foot of the MLS Western Conference table.
