United took the lead in the first half through Eric Cantona, who latched onto a fine through ball from Andrei Kanchelskis to finish after a superb first touch into the area.
It was 2-0 shortly after as Cantona fed Kanchelskis for the first of his three goals with a deflected effort, before Cantona flicked it on for the Ukrainian to net his second after the break.
Roy Keane's cross was then prodded home by Mark Hughes at the second attempt, and Kanchelskis rounded off a fine night at Old Trafford with a breakaway goal, again on the rebound.
There were no happy endings to the season at Old Trafford, however, as Blackburn pipped them to the Premier League title.
The Manchester derby will be live on Sky Sports from the Etihad Stadium on Thursday evening.
