Manchester United are waiting for news on defender Marcos Rojo after the Argentinean had to be substituted during the first half of Saturday's FA Cup win over Reading.

Jose Mourinho's in-form side cruised to a 4-0 win over their Championship opponents but the one negative note was the injury to Rojo, who was replaced by Phil Jones after just 19 minutes.

Rojo has been a first-team regular of late and any injury-enforced spell on the sidelines would be poorly-timed from United's perspective, with his fellow defender Eric Bailly having departed to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Asked about the Rojo injury, Mourinho told MUTV: "I don't know, we have to wait a little bit.

"A muscle is a muscle and you're always afraid of it but let's see what is going on.

"It would be so important for us to keep our central defenders fit for the month of January, but I prefer to wait. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones did a very good job for us."

United have a busy week coming up, starting with the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against Hull on Tuesday, before a massive Premier League game at home to Liverpool next Sunday.

It has been speculated that United might make a move for a defender during the transfer window but Mourinho said on Friday that he did not think a new signing would be necessary.
