TIM CAHILL is close to signing for Turkish side Karabukspor.

The former Everton star has quit Melbourne City in a bid to land first-team action in the build-up to Australia's World Cup adventure in Russia.

Cahill, 38, has apparently received three offers to play outside of the A League with an English League One side and a Japanese J2 League outfit also keen on him.

But Turkish Super Lig side Karabukspor are favourites to bag his signature.

Midfielder Cahill played under David Moyes at Everton from 2004-12.

He made 257 starts and scored 68 goals in a highly successful stay on Merseyside.

He was signed from Millwall and moved on to play for New York Red Bulls and Shanghai Shenhua before joining Melbourne in the summer of 2016.

It is thought Cahill is keen to join Soccerroos' teammate Tony Popovic at struggling Karabukspor.

Karabukspor have lost their last six matches in the Super Lig and are bottom of the table after scoring just 13 goals in 14 games.

The move will see Cahill become the second Australian in the Turkish top flight, with Aziz Behich currently in red-hot form for Bursaspor.

He leaves Melbourne having made precious little impact.

Cahill's reputation as arguably the most popular and well-known player in Australia led people to believe his move to the A-League would be a boost for the competition.

He signed a multi-million dollar three-year contract but, in tghe twilight of his career, failed to make a big impact

Sadly, he spent much of his time time as an impact substitute. Meanwhile, his signing did little to raise Melbourne's average gate of around 10,500.

But he continues to be a key figure for the Socceroos, scoring the winner against Syria that took Australia to next summer's World Cup finals.
