David Unsworth was placed in temporary charge, but he looks to have failed to win over Farhad Moshiri that he is the man to take the club forward.

Attention was switched to Marco Silva, who is earning rave reviews for guiding Watford well into the top half of the table.

But despite offering around £10million to the Hornets to prise the Portuguese boss to switch clubs, Watford held their ground.

Everton began their chase for Silva on November 13.

Last week Hornets' chairman and chief executive Scott Duxbury made it abundantly clear they would not be releasing Silva under any circumstances.

Silva is under contract at Vicarage Road until June 2019. He would have needed to resign to take the Goodison role.

NO CHANCE Everton rebuffed in bid to snare this top Prem boss

So Rangnick, who is believed by many to be the brains behind RB Leipzig's rise in the Bundesliga, is next on the shortlist.

He was actually interviewed by the Merseysiders in the summer of 2013 to replace David Moyes, but was trumped to the post by Roberto Martinez.

But he has spent only 12 months as a manager in the last six years.

Luis van Gaal has ruled out a move to Goodison Park, although there is word from Spain that Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone might be interested.
