Antoine Griezmann came closest for the visitors after being put through one on one but stroked his shot straight at Qarabag keeper Ibrahim Sehic.

And Diego Simeone's men could count themselves lucky that the hosts' most dangerous man on the night, striker Dino Ndlovu, was controversially sent off.

The forward was shown a second yellow after 75 minutes for diving but replays showed there was minimal contact.

Atletico turned up the heat with the man advantage and laid a late siege to Qarabag's goal.
