Marc Overmars to return to Arsenal in director of football-style role to help struggling Arsene Wenger
Former winger will reportedly help Wenger secure transfer targets in much the same way recently departed Dick Law did
MARC OVERMARS is to return to Arsenal in a director of football-style role to aid struggling Arsene Wenger.
The Frenchman has always been opposed to having someone in that position at the club he has managed for more than 20 years.
But it appears club hero Overmars, who made 141 appearances for the Gunners, will fulfil many of the duties carried out by Dick Law, the club's transfer fixer who left last month.
The Dutchman will return to Arsenal a fan favourite and with boardroom experience from his years at Ajax.
Overmars, 44, has been director of football at the Eredivisie side who finished runner-up in the league last season.
But it remains to be seen quite how well the man who bagged 40 goals for the side will gel with his former manager.
Especially given Wenger's reluctance to have someone help out at the top level.
Earlier this year, the Frenchman said: "I never understand what it means, director of football.
"I'm manager of Arsenal and as long as I am manager, I will decide what happens on the technical front. That's it."
But it can be assumed many Arsenal fans would welcome the 67-year-old boss getting some help.
The Gunners were left stunned to a late winner from Watford's Tom Cleverley on the weekend.
And the club could lose their two star players in Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.
It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Overmars could help the club find a buyer for the German World Cup winner in January.
Wenger recently signed a new two-year deal that SunSport columnist Alan Shearer believes shows failure is acceptable at the club.
