A statement on the club's official website read: "Everyone at Arsenal is looking forward to Calum's continued contribution to the club."

He said: "Proud to sign a new contract with Arsenal.

"I know I'm still a young player and I want to have my best years playing for this football club.

The centre-back looked a cert for the Emirates exit after tumbling down the first-team pecking order under Arsene Wenger, with Leicester moving in with a £20m that was rejected.

The BBC reported that Chambers was told at the end of last season that he was surplus to requirements and free to leave.

But the England youngster's career has taken a positive U-turn and his future remains with the Gunners.

Chambers impressed on loan at Middlesbrough last season where the problem for the goal-shy relegated side was at the other end of the pitch.

Crystal Palace were reported to have made a £16m bid for the England under-21 international but that too was rebuffed.

Chambers was signed from Southampton for £16m in 2014 and made 36 appearances in his first season at the Emirates.
