Liverpool transfer news: Emre Can future remains in doubt as Juventus chief admits they tried to sign him in summer

Germany star's contract expires next summer and will be free to hold talks with European clubs over a free transfer in the new year

JUVENTUS failed with a bid to land Liverpool's Emre Can in the summer but could return with a fresh offer in January.

The German midfielder's contract expires at the end of the season and can sign a pre-contract agreement with a European club in January if he holds off penning a new deal.

Can, 23, is believed to be looking for a way out of the club with one eye on a move to the Italian champions.

Juventus' CEO Beppe Marotta made it no secret that the Old Lady attempted to sign Can in the summer and hinted that they could hold further talks with Liverpool in the new year.

Speaking to Italian publication Premium Sport, he said: "We don't think we are going to make a big signing in January.

"As for Emre Can I don't think Liverpool will sell him in January.

"We made an offer for him in the summer but the Reds didn't sell him so I don't think they'll change their mind in the middle of the season.

"Our team is absolutely competitive and we have some very interesting midfielders like Bentancur who has already showed his qualities."

Liverpool could be forced to sell him for a cut-price fee in January or risk losing him for nothing six months later.

Earlier this month Marotta conceded that they are keeping a close watch on Can's contract situation and will "admire him from afar" for now.

He said: "Liverpool are holding on tight to Emre Can.

“His contract expires in June. We’ll be able to negotiate with him from January. We won’t hide the fact we like him.

“But currently he is a Liverpool player, so we can only admire him from afar.”
