Manchester City star Benjamin Mendy flies out to Barcelona for specialist scans on knee injury
MANCHESTER CITY defender Benjamin Mendy is set to see a knee specialist in Spain due to fears his injury is worse than first thought.
The full-back lasted 29 minutes of Saturday’s win against Crystal Palace at the Etihad.
City boss Pep Guardiola was hopeful Mendy would be able to train with the squad ahead of the Champions League tie with Shakhtar Donetsk.
However the 23-year-old was a no-show and will head off to Barcelona for a specialist to run the rule over his injury.
Dr Ramon Cugat, who is a friend of Guardiola will assess Mendy – City’s medical department are familiar with his work after treating Vincent Kompany, Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne last season.
The French international joined City as part of the summer Monaco exodus for £52million.
He missed the start of the campaign with a thigh injury, came back to feature in the last five games for his new club.
Any significant lay-off for Mendy will be a massive blow for Guardiola who has no recognised left-back to call on.
