Afterwards, he was told by doctors that he will not be back until January.

The news is a massive blow for Burnley and their manager Sean Dyche who could now look for a new keeper.

The club, who face Liverpool on Saturday, have Nick Pope and Adam Legzdins as back-up.

Ex-Charlton keeper Hope, 25, came on to make an unexpected Prem debut against Palace.

Former Manchester United stopper Anders Lindegaard has already been linked with a move.

He is a free agent after being released by Preston so would be allowed to join.

Heaton, 31, has been a major part of Burnley becoming an established Premier League team and he has been rewarded with three caps for England’s senior side.

He was one of four keepers included in Gareth Southgate's last squad for the games with Malta and Slovakia and was chosen ahead of Southampton's Fraser Forster.

But now, it looks as though he will struggle to force his way back into Southgate's plans ahead of the World Cup in Russia.

His form last season has also sparked interest from other clubs with Everton monitoring his games last term although they moved for Jordan Pickford.
