Manchester City transfer window: Those who proudly looked at the Alexis Sanchez mess and mocked us were wrong… our summer was a success

AS a Manchester City fan, it’s hard to consider our transfer window anything other than a success.

This may come as a surprise to some neutrals who proudly looked upon the Alexis Sanchez mess and took arms to social media to gleefully denounce City’s deadline day as a disaster, but all evidence points to the contrary.

I’m willing to admit that the ‘will he, won’t he?’ narrative surrounding Sanchez this window was  frustrating and the antics on deadline day embarrassing for all clubs involved.

They were perhaps the dodgiest transfer deadline tactics I can remember since Manchester United hid Dimitar Berbatov under a blanket back in 2008, but this shouldn’t be allowed to sour a transfer window that was otherwise ruthlessly efficient.

If you’d asked any Manchester City fan what the team lacked last season I’d bet my hat they’d have bemusedly complained about the calamitous Claudio Bravo and City’s dependence on a set of full-backs long past their sell-by-date.

This window the club finally managed to put this right.

The addition of keeper Ederson Moraes looks like a shrewd one with the Brazilian settling in well and looking strong throughout the opening games of the season.

And City’s additions of Ben Mendy, Danilo and Kyle Walker have allowed Pep Guardiola to add proven quality to what was his weakest position.

Factor these buys into the fact that we’ve bolstered the ranks with young stars Bernardo Silva and Douglas Luiz, while keeping hold of veterans Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero, suddenly City look more future-proof than ever.

If Guardiola can get his defensive additions to gel quickly and iron out a few Otamendi-Stones mix-ups, I can’t see us not winning the title.

By my reckoning, we lost the title race in our own half last season and by strengthening at the back, Pep has made us favourites.

I’m very aware that I might come across as a deluded happy-clapper, trying to ignore the fact that the club missed out on Sanchez.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed.

But with the attacking talent already at the club, the likes of Leroy Sane and Gabriel Jesus both on the brink of mega stardom this season, I expect Guardiola to utilise their strengths and develop them into players that can compete with the likes of Sanchez.

Ultimately, Pep has had the time he asked for, the players he asked for, now it’s over to him to prove it was all worthwhile.
