SOUTHAMPTON stars became Big Issue sellers for the day – to celebrate a special Saints’ edition of the street newspaper.

Nathan Redmond, £18million record buy Manolo Gabbiadini, Oriol Romeu and Florin Gardos wore vendor vests and big smiles to ply their trade in rainy Winchester.

The Southampton quartet swapped the Premier League high-life for the high street to help offload copies of a newspaper traditionally sold by homeless people.

The players teamed up and chatted with regular Big Issue sellers in the city centre as they promoted the club’s fundraising Saints Foundation.

Once-capped England winger Redmond, 23, seemed most at ease as he nattered away with one seller in the video put on Twitter by Southampton.

And, although it was for a powerful cause, the day spent with the Big Issue was a relaxing build-up to the big kick-off – at home to Swansea in the Premier League opener.

The unique edition of the newspaper, with Saints defender Jack Stephens on the cover, will be given out with the club’s matchday magazine at Saturday’s game.

Redmond told Southampton’s website: “I could see how hard these guys have to work, they’re out in all weather.

“It's not easy and I have huge respect for them.”

The Saints hope their new partnership with the newspaper will give Big Issue vendors the chance to join an eight-week employability programme.
