Tottenham given huge boost in pursuit of Schalke star Max Meyer as he admits he could leave this summer
Mauricio Pochettino is a long-term fan of Germany star Meyer after failing with bid to land midfielder
TOTTENHAM'S hopes of signing Germany star Max Meyer have been boosted after he admitted he may leave Schalke this summer.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has been a long-term admirer of the creative midfielder but has been frustrated in his attempts to sign him in the past.
Pochettino first made a move for Meyer last summer when Spurs sounded out Schalke about a £38million deal.
They were knocked back by the Bundesliga club on that occasion, but Meyer has since rejected the offer of a new deal to stay at the club.
The 21-year-old now has just a year left on his existing deal with Schalke and is now refusing to rule out leaving the club.
Speaking to Bild, Meyer said: "I declined the offer because I was not satisfied with my personal situation.
"I just saw no chance to develop. It would have been the wrong step, however, because the overall situation has changed.
"I am completely open on my future. Let's see what happens.

"It is not the case that I will definitely go. I never said I would change clubs - let alone this summer - I just did not renew the contract."
Spurs are the only club out of the 92 professional sides in England yet to sign any players over the close season.
Chairman Daniel Levy last week revealed the club would only sign players they felt would seriously improve their side - preferring instead to give youngsters a chance.
Pochettino is aware his rivals in the chase for the Premier League title have invested heavily over the course of the summer strengthening their squads.
But he is refusing to do business he feels is not good value - including pulling back from his interest in Everton's Ross Barkley because of his wage demands.
Spurs do have money to invest in players, with the accounts also boosted by the £50m netted from the sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City.
