Marko Arnautovic scores first goal for West Ham as Joe Hart makes debut against Werder Bremen

Austrian striker nets after club-record £25m transfer from Stoke, while England goalkeeper makes his first appearance on loan from Manchester City

MARKO ARNAUTOVIC scored his first goal for West Ham as Joe Hart made his debut for the club in a 2-2 pre-season draw with Werder Bremen.

The Austrian striker, whose £25m switch from Stoke was a club record for the Hammers, got on the end of a cross to open his account in Lohne.

Arnautovic had made an impressive 30-minute debut for West Ham in the first part of the Betway Cup double header with Werder Bremen, on Friday night.

The German side won that first match 1-0, so finished aggregate 3-2 winners when the second leg finished less than 24 hours later.

Hart, who is on loan from Manchester City after spending last season at Torino, made his first appearance in the second game on Saturday afternoon.

He was unable to stop Luca Caldirola's close-range header giving Werder a 15th-minute lead.

Arnautovic then poked in Arthur Masuaku's deflected cross for an equaliser after 25 minutes.

Toni Martinez put West Ham ahead after 75 minutes, heading home Andre Ayew's cross, but Zhang Yuning levelled nine minutes from time.

Arnautovic's switch from Stoke had provoked a war of words, with Potters chairman Peter Coates accusing the Austrian of showing no gratitude after the club helped rebuild his career.

But Arnautovic's brother hit back, saying Coates should show more respect.

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic said he was pleased at how his new signings had combined with the rest of the team in the two games against Werder Bremen.

“That’s why we got them, because they are good players,” he said. “They know the league and they are top players so that’s what we expect from them.

“They are going to need time to gel with our old players but it was very, very promising.”
