But United are relaxed about the situation and are in no rush to meet them.

They know they have him for another 12 months and also have the option to extend his stay by a further year until 2019.

The 29-year-old joined United for a club record fee of £37.1million in January 2014 from Chelsea.

The midfielder started at Real Madrid before making his name at Valencia.

Mata currently earns around £170,000 per week and has been a popular figure during his three-and-a-half years at United.

His future was in doubt when Jose Mourinho - the man who sold him at Chelsea - took charge but he got plenty of chances last season.

The Reds pre-season tour is also well underway as they have already faced LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake and Manchester City.

They will play five more games including Real Madrid twice along with Barcelona, Valerenga IF and UC Sampdoria before returning back to the UK and back to business in the Premier League.
