Manchester United offer Wayne Rooney chance to return to Old Trafford as ambassador despite leaving to join Everton

Former skipper left for Goodison Park this summer as part of deal which saw Romelu Lukaku move in opposite direction

WAYNE ROONEY has been offered the chance to return to Old Trafford as a club ambassador.

Rooney ended his 13 years as a player with Manchester United this month as he rejoined boyhood club Everton.

But executive vice chairman Ed Woodward does not want Rooney’s association with United to end.

The offer was not part of his last contract but was given verbally before he left for Goodison Park.

The Red Devils have no plans at present to build a Rooney statue but there could be one in the future.

He joined at the age of 18 with Chelsea appearing to establish themselves as the new dominant force in English football.

However, after three seasons, he won the first of three title victories in a row — and he has since added two more.

Rooney also won the Champions League, a Fifa Club World Cup, a Europa League an FA Cup and the EFL Cup on four occasions.

During the previous campaign, the former United captain broke the club’s goalscoring record.

And, during his three-year tenure as skipper, the club won three major trophies.

Dwight Yorke and Denis Irwin are other former players who are now ambassadors.
