But Mourinho said: “We have never thought about it because he is such an important player for his club, of great economic power, where we have not been able to find for whatever reason something that could have made us think that Ronaldo could leave.

"I’m not going to waste my time thinking about players who are mission impossible."

United sold Ronaldo to Real Madrid in 2009 for £80million.

At the time Ferguson said he thought he would return one day.

That could well have happened in the summer if 2013 but when Ferguson retired the deal was off.

Now it looks like it will never happen.

Mourinho has also reiterated his disappointment at failing to get Alvaro Morata.

He gave him his debut at Real Madrid but failed in an attempt to reunite with him when Real asked for £80million after United offered £60million.

He said: “It is a shame. It is a player who made it to the first team with me. We have a special liking for, he is someone special.

“I enjoyed watching his evolution in Juventus and Madrid. It is like that.

"I don’t think he can end with us.”

He said: “He's a team player and was not worried about himself. He was worried about the improvement of the team.”

Mourinho said: “He's learning a lot, a great pro, with a great attitude.

“Last season he was not scoring goals and missing a lot of chances which was not a drama because that's part of the evolution.

“We know he is going to score more goals than last season.”
