But now the Catalan giants are believed to have joined the battle to prise him away from French champions Monaco, report French newspaper L'Equipe.

Throw Champions League-bound Tottenham into the fay, and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has a battle on his hands to bag Lemar.

SunSport reported yesterday that although North London rivals Tottenham can offer Champions League football, Wenger is increasingly optimistic he has enticed Lemar to the Emirates.

The 21-year-old has an asking price of £30million which Arsenal  are willing to match as they attempt to bring in better quality over the summer.

Having dropped into the Europa League the Gunners board know they have to invest in new faces or risk falling further behind their Premier League rivals.

And the first big money player to arrive in the close season could well be Lemar, who caught the eye in Monaco’s impressive young side last season.

The French club fear seeing the team who made it through to the Champions League semi-final last season broken up as the giants of European football circle.

Playmaker Bernardo Silva was the first to leave as he completed a £43m move to Manchester City.

And now Barca have entered the race for Lemar, it could well lead to a bidding war that the North London outfit could well lose out on.
