Nev's warning

Wayne Rooney’s Manchester United future needs to be resolved to stop it ‘clogging up’ pre-season, says Gary Neville

England star is still unsure on where he will end up next term, despite previously saying he was weeks away from a decision

WAYNE ROONEY'S future must be sorted out to prevent the situation from "clogging up" Manchester United's pre-season, says Gary Neville.

Following the Red Devils' triumph in the Europa League final, Rooney said he was close to deciding on his future but he is yet to confirm his next move.

United are yet to offer him a new contract as the club's highest-ever goalscorer enters the final year of his contract.

Rooney's former team-mate, Neville, fears the longer this situation goes on, it could affect Jose Mourinho's pre-season.

Neville told the BBC: "You don't want to create voids for speculation around such big players."

He added: "I am surprised it has not been dealt with.

"You don't want that speculation to hang over a pre-season because every single press conference and media session will be clogged up with the issue of whether he is staying or going."

So far, Rooney has been linked with moves to the US, China and his former club Everton.

After United won the Europa League, Rooney said: "I’ve got decisions to make now over the next few weeks, have a word with my family, and then I’ll decide.

“I think, of course you want to play, you want to be on the pitch, of course. I think a younger me would have been a lot more frustrated.

“I think I understand what’s right and what’s needed for the club, and I respect that.

“Obviously I’m happy to be part of that and in some way help the club win trophies, and that’s the way it’s been over the last 18 months, last year, and that’s a decision I have to make now, whether I want to continue doing that or go on and play more regular football.

“There’s lots of offers on the table, both in England and abroad and really that’s what I have to decide on.

“I’ve played for two Premier League clubs and they’re the only two Premier League clubs I’ll play for.

“I think I just have to make a decision in terms of a football decision, and that’s what I’ll do.

"I’ll do that in the next few weeks with my family while I’m away and, honestly, as soon as I know what’s going on then, I’m sure you will.”
