GLEN JOHNSON has opened talks with Stoke over a one-year contract extension.

Mark Hughes is ready to offer another year to the 32-year-old to fight off competition from Crystal Palace and West Ham.

Johnson could leave for free at the end of the season as he has not played enough games to trigger an automatic new deal.

But Sparky wants him in his plans and the club are attempting to tie him down for another campaign.

Palace boss Sam Allardyce had wanted Johnson to compete with Joel Ward at right-back.

Meanwhile, West Ham asked about him in the January window.

Slaven Bilic wants to strengthen that position and is also monitoring Manchester City pair Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna.

Ex-Chelsea defender Johnson earned a recall to the England squad earlier in the season with his form for Stoke.

Gareth Southgate called on him for cover but he had to pull out on the eve of facing Malta through injury.
