When substitute Joann Berg Gudmundsson's shot hit the post and bounced onto the keeper’s back, only to stop dead instead of rolling back into the net, it began to feel like it wouldn't be Burnley's day.
However, Gudmundsson got back on the ball and swung a ball into the boz that was met perfectly by the towering Chris Wood to provide Burnley with a late equaliser.
Under extreme pressure, West Ham couldn't quite hold on at Turf Moor after Andy Carroll was deservedly sent off for a double–pronged assault on Burnley defenders James Tarkowski and Ben Mee.
Carroll seemed to lose the plot after Michail Antonio’s 19th minute strike put the Hammers in front –within eight minutes of that goal the big striker had laid out both central defenders with his elbow.
Mee’s failure to deal with Joe Hart’s long clearance allowed Antonio to round Nick Pope and roll the ball into the unguarded net. But that was just about the only time they were found wanting in the air.
Carroll’s lack of success against the Burnley pair probably caused the frustration that led to his first yellow card, after 25 minutes.
West Ham were forced to cling on grimly at Turf Moor after Andy Carroll was deservedly sent off for a double–pronged assault on Burnley defenders James Tarkowski and Ben Mee.

Carroll’s lack of success against the Burnley pair probably caused the frustration that led to his first yellow card, after 25 minutes.
The challenge was not particularly malicious -it was more a case of Carroll trying to use Tarkowski for leverage and catching him with the elbow. But it merited a booking.
The second, on 27 minutes, was simply crazy, especially as there had been less than thirty seconds of playing time between the two incidents by the time Tarkowski had received treatment
Carroll protested furiously over the second yellow, pointing to his head as if he’d won the ball. But referee Stuart Attwell was having none of it.
Carroll was not even looking at the high ball as he launched himself at Mee with his elbow stretched out, and he caught the Burnley player a sicking blow to the neck.
West Ham boss Slaven Bilic ridiculously led the touchline complaints at that decision. But opposite number Sean Dyche had far more right to feel hard done by a few minutes later when Joe Hart sent Chris Wood sprawling in the penalty box.
Hart’s gesture after he dived at Wood’s few a few yards from goal suggested he tried to pull back at the last minute in an attempt to avoid contact.
Attwell clearly agreed, although replays showed Hart brought the Burnley striker down after he got to the ball first.
The win does little for West Ham as they still languish above the drop zone, though the draw sees the Clarets climb to sixth place.
