Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel reveals he is ‘ready and has enough understanding’ to become football manager
The Premier League veteran has hinted a heroic return to the game after hanging up his boots over 14 years ago
GOALKEEPING legend Peter Schmeichel has announced his long-term desire to become a football manager.
The former Manchester United ace announced his retirement from the game in 2003, but a return could be on the horizon.
Schmeichel is renowned for his success at Manchester United, whom he captained to 1999 UEFA Champions League to complete the treble.
The Danish shot-stopper played for United, Manchester City, Sporting CP and Aston Villa throughout his remarkable career.
However, becoming a successful football pundit for the BBC after hanging up his boots just isn't enough for the 1992 IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper.
He told Danish website Spillerforeningen: "What has always been training in my mind is being the coach or manager.
"In my last active years, I began to take a lot of training courses.
"But I suddenly also discovered how difficult it might be to be a manager if you are not good enough. Or ready for it.
"The squad I was in at Manchester City was a squad where a lot of star players were bought, but many of them were not star players.
"The attitudes were with many and they set themselves first.

"It just did not get well managed and it ended up in a lot of unnecessary conflicts, insecurities and irritation from a lot of players.
During Schmeichel's spell with the Citizens, he learnt a lot from boss Kevin Keegan about the harsh realities behind becoming a manager.
He said: "Kevin Keegan was otherwise one of the so-called biggest and one of the main reasons I went to Manchester City. I would like to see how he worked and learn from him.
"I feel I'm ready and have enough understanding and life experience to be accountable to a group of young players of different talent, background, nationality and ethnicity.
"I'm glad I didn't jump into it because it could have had a number of consequences.
"So maybe someone might say that maybe I am getting too late into it. But I do not think so."
