ROBIN VAN PERSIE is set for an emotional return to Feyenoord, the club where it all began.

The Dutchman is currently with Turkish outfit Fenerbahce, but they are keen to offload him so they can purchase Macedonian wonderkid Elif Elmas.

And Feyenoord are believed to be keen to swoop for the former Manchester United striker according to reports, 13 years after he last turned out for De Stadionclub.

Van Persie is out of contract at the end of the season, but Fenerbahce are keen to strike a deal with Feyenoord that could see him join up imminently as a free agent.

Turkish news-site Aksam reports that the 34-year-old "already has an agreement" with the Dutch outfit, and that Fenerbahce are prepared to "leave him out of the squad" if no deal can be reached.

Van Persie scored 14 goals for Feyenoord after making his debut in 2001.

Then came a bargain £2.75m move to Arsenal on May 16 2004, where he went on to score 112 goals in all competitions and became one of the Premier League's most lethal finishers.

But he soured his relationship with the Gunners when he made a £24m move to fierce rivals Manchester United.

He won the league title with the Red Devils, and scored 48 times in 78 league starts in the three seasons he was at Old Trafford.

Fenerbahce snapped him up in July 2015 for just £3.8m.

Feyenoord brought former Liverpool man Dirk Kuyt back to the club nine years after he left for the Kop and his return has proved a huge success.
