POOR finishing cost both teams in a draw which was not was always a bore.

Bournemouth could have been out of sight by half time, missing a number of chances and being denied an early penalty.

But Shinji Okazaki missed a great second-half opportunity which might have stolen all three points for lacklustre Leicester.

Bournemouth started quickly and should have been two up inside five minutes.

First, Jermain Defoe hit the bar from Josh King’s cross and Marc Pugh’s follow-up was deflected behind by Danny Simpson’s arm, only for referee Graham Scott to award a corner instead of a spotkick.

Then Junior Stanislas’s fine pass found Defoe, who has held up by Wes Morgan but managed to tee up Pugh, who dragged his right-foot shot badly wide.

Jamie Vardy had made it known his dodgy hip was not up to England duty and he might as well not have bothered turning up in Bournemouth in the first half, so poor were Leicester and the service they gave him.

They visitors seemed incapable of keeping the ball and were non-existent going forward, with Riyad Mahrez dropped to the bench after his stinker in the defeat by Liverpool.

The Foxes continued to be vulnerable at the back, where Harry Maguire seemed  all at sea. But they escaped punishment again when Pugh crossed for King and the Norwegian’s left-foot shot was dreadfully off target.

And Pugh was frustrating and frustrated yet again just before half time when Morgan diverted King’s cross into his path.

The Bournemouth player thought his shot had taken a deflection off Simpson on its way over the bar but he should really have done better.

Bournemouth remained on top in the second period, with Kasper Schmeichel twice called into action to deal with a Stanislas shot and a King cross.

But the feeling was growing that it would be typical for Leicester to nick a goal from somewhere. They should have done on the hour when the ball broke to Okazaki 10 yards out. But the Japan striker’s shot was wastefully wide.

The Cherries kept picking at the Leicester backline. Defoe tried to divert a Cook shot into the net and Andrew Surman curled one just wide.

The home fans screamed for a penalty when Christian Fuchs held off Defoe in the box, then Stanislas forced another save out of Schmeichel.

Then Demarai Gray tested Asmir Begovic at the other end and Wilfred Ndidi’s follow-up was deflected wide.

WHAT THEY SAID

Leicester City boss Craig Shakespeare: "It's a hard-earned point, I felt we started the game very slowly and gave the momentum to Bournemouth.

"To come away with a point on reflection is a hard-earned point, We had to defend with resilience in numbers.

"We didn't quite have that quality on the ball. On Monday I'll sit down and think a point well earned.

"We have to move on now."

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe: “A very good performance, we created enough to win three or four games in that one. It wasn't our day but we started fast

“It was difficult for me to see the handball but having seen Marc Pugh's reaction, I banked on his reaction and I know that was right having seen it now.

“The referee's view may have been limited and if the linesman didn't have a view either, well then you can't give it if you didn't see it - so I have sympathy in that respect. “
