Northampton parted company with former boss Justin Edinburgh last Thursday following the club's dismal start to the new campaign.

The former Chelsea forward was a free agent after loosing his job with Queens Park Rangers last November after just 11 months in charge.

Hasslebaink was dismissed at Loftus Road after leaving the Rs sitting just six points above the relegation zone in the Sky Bet Championship.

Prior to this, the 45-year-old guided Burton Albion to League 1 glory during his year in charge.

The Cobblers are yet to pick up a point this term and are currently sitting at the bottom of the League One standings.

Northampton chairman Kelvin Thomas told the club website: "We had two targets that we wanted to speak to initially and Jimmy became our top choice so we are pleased."

Hasslebaink kicked off his managerial career with Belgian side Royal Antwerp, where he led the club to a seventh-place finish in the 2013/14 season, before turning down a new deal with the club.

The Dutchman has a full UEFA A licence and will return to the sidelines after 11 months out of work.

Former Cobblers boss Justin Edinburgh was sacked after just four matches in League One.

The former Gillingham manager had two years left on his contract after joining the club in January.
