Arsenal fans jump to defend under-fire Mesut Ozil after German ace hit back at club legends

Germany international has come in for heavy criticism for his performances in Arsenal's last two defeats and for 'holding the club hostage' over his wage demands

ARSENAL fans have defended under-fire Mesut Ozil after the Germany ace launched an attack on the club's "legends".

The playmaker and his team-mates have come under ruthless criticism from former players such as Thierry Henry, Martin Keown and Emmanuel Petit for Arsenal's dour start to the season.

A 1-0 defeat at Stoke was followed up by a 4-0 thrashing against Liverpool with Ozil taking the brunt of the flak for his lacklustre performances.

It forced him to take to Instagram to apologise to fans before claiming he "expected legends to behave like legends" and to "stop talking and start supporting."

Ozil's relationship with the club has also deteriorated with his reluctance to sign a new mega-money contract.

The playmaker is reportedly demanding a massive £300,000-a-week to extend his current deal which expires next summer.

Henry, Arsenal's club-record goalscorer, slammed Ozil for "holding the club hostage" with his wage demands.

But Gunner supporters have taken to Twitter to defend the "world class" former Real Madrid man and believe the quality of his team-mates continues to affect his performances.

One supporter wrote: "Mesut Ozil is a world class player who's not unfortunate to play for Arsenal but rather unfortunate to play with some below par players."

Another fan said: "Mesut Ozil is one of the best players we've ever had at this club."

Twitter user named 'Arsenal Guvnor' believes supporters should be blessed to have a player of his quality at the club. He wrote: "Mesut Ozil, world class and we are blessed to have him at Arsenal. End of discussion."

Renowned Arsenal fan Piers Morgan is among the 28-year-old’s biggest critics.

The TV host said recently: “My advice to you, Mr Ozil, is to stop boasting about meaningless trophies and start working harder for this chronically underperforming team.”

But not every Arsenal fan on social media believes Ozil deserves his place in Arsene Wenger's team with many branding him a luxury player.

One frustrated supporter said: "Mesut Ozil is one of the most overrated, luxury players of all time."
