His team-mates, all playing in Queen Park Rangers' home jersey, couldn't help but crack up as Merson struggled for breath as he piled cake in his mouth.

Merson's stunt was to try and encourage viewers to donate money to charity.

Before the match kicked-off, the commentators said if the viewers see Merson eating a cake on the bench they should text in to donate £3 to the cause.

The good-natured clash at Loftus Road is to raise money to help the victims of the Grenfell Tower tragedy where at least 80 people died in a fire on June 14.

And Merson played his part in the initiative half way through the first-half.

Viewers of the clash took to Twitter with some claiming "it doesn't get much better than that."

One person said: "Paul Merson is actually eating a gateau on the bench!"

Another wrote: "Paul Merson eating that cake is the funniest thing I've ever watched" with another joking that "Paul Merson is in his prime..."

Team Les Ferdinand's side took an early lead through Mo Farah before Trevor Sinclair equalised for Alan Shearer's team in controversial fashion.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is set to make an appearance in the second half between the sticks.
