Manchester City star Benjamin Mendy blasted by Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard over poking fun at Brighton own-goal
Frenchman missed 2-0 win at Falmer Stadium but his comment on Twitter about Lewis Dunk's blunder caused a stir.
MANCHESTER CITY defender Benjamin Mendy has been blasted by Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard for his "disrespectful" tweet about Lewis Dunk's own goal.
Mendy, who missed the game through injury, tweed: "Bullet header" after Dunk put the ball past his own keeper.
After the match, BT Sport pundits and England legends Gerrard and Lampard accused the Frenchman of taking a "cheap shot".
The former Liverpool captain said: "To be honest I don't like to see that, there's no need for it.
"There will be a time this season when Mendy makes a mistake and he's going to be wide open to criticism."
Lampard then added: "I agree with Stevie there. Why don't you just have a few seconds to double check that that's the right thing to send?
"Steve is exactly right. He's got to play this season and he might get done at some stage, someone else might want to tweet about him.
Gerrard then suggested that Vincent Kompany should have a quiet word with Mendy.

He added: "I would. Being captain of the team, if that happened there, I'd just say be careful moving forward because you'll leave yourself wide open.
"I think it's disrespectful to a fellow professional and I think there's totally no need for it at all."
Meanwhile, the backlash on social media had already started as Multimedia MMA reporter Niall McGrath replied to his tweet: "Totally unprofessional, may well come back to bite him later in the season."
But Mendy, who joined City in a stunning £52million deal from Monaco this summer, defended his comment.
He wrote: "thats called humor U should try it sometimes (+ that might come back & people joke about it, thats ok its all fun)."
The Manchester City defender, 23, signed off Twitter last night with one last tweet to apologise: "(Sorry to the few people who got offended.... was just banter nothing personal) enjoy your night everyone #CmonCity'."
