Gary Neville: Zlatan Ibrahimovic isn’t a threat to Man United star

The Man United legend rubbishes the suggestion Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a threat to Romelu Lukaku

Gary Neville doesn’t believe Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a threat to Romelu Lukaku at Manchester United.

The former Sweden international has made his long-awaited return to first-team action from a long-term knee problem at the start of November.

Ibrahimovic has been limited to four substitute appearances despite Lukaku’s uninspiring form leading the Manchester United attack.

Lukaku has only managed to score one goal in his last 10 games in all competitions to raise concerns about the 24-year-old centre-forward.

The £75m summer signing has scored eight times and has made four assists in 14 games in the Premier League since his big-money move from Everton.

However, Ibrahimovic is putting Lukaku under pressure for a starting spot after the 36-year-old netted 28 times in all competitions last term.

Manchester United will make the trip to Arsenal in their next Premier League game at The Emirates on Saturday evening before the Manchester derby on Sunday 12 December.

Former Red Devils defender Neville rubbished the suggestion Ibrahimovic is a genuine threat to summer signing Lukaku.

“I don’t see Zlatan Ibrahimovic as a threat to Lukaku at all but as a supplement,” Neville told Sky Sports. “The only way Ibrahimovic can become number one is if the aura of Zlatan gets to Lukaku.

“Zlatan is confident but Lukaku is number one, the fans and the manager believe in him and if he does have any demons then he needs to clear them from his mind.”

Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but eight points behind current leaders Manchester City.

The Red Devils won the Europa League and the League Cup in their first season under Jose Mourinho.
