Liverpool FC urged to sack Jurgen Klopp and appoint 58-year-old manager

Garth Crooks believes Liverpool should appoint Carlo Ancelotti as their new manager while the Italian is available

Liverpool should sack Jurgen Klopp and appoint Carlo Ancelotti as their new manager at Anfield, according to Garth Crooks.

The Reds lost 4-1 to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Sunday to raise serious questions about Liverpool’s defensive problems under Klopp.

The German coach has seen his Liverpool team concede 16 times in their opening nine games to leave the Reds in ninth place in the table.

Klopp attempted to sign Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk in the summer transfer window but Liverpool were unable to complete a deal for the Netherlands international.

The Liverpool boss failed to identify an alternative to Van Dijk and the Merseyside outfit started the season with Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan as their centre-half options.

Former Spurs forward Crooks believes Liverpool should make a move for Ancelotti while the former AC Milan, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich manager is available.

“Liverpool are a great club with amazing history and they deserve a manager to reflect those points,” Crooks told BBC Sport.

“There are few managers in the world who can take the title to Anfield but I believe former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti is one of those.

“The blind spot causing current Reds boss Jurgen Klopp not to see the deficiencies in his defence is becoming seriously embarrassing and must be affecting players like Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

“I said at the beginning of the season that it was madness to turn down the £100m-plus offer from Barcelona for Coutinho and not use that money to build a defence worthy of challenging for the title. Having rejected that extraordinary offer, Liverpool executives are now forced to rethink the club’s strategy and fix what is an obvious problem.

“The man that can do that is Ancelotti and they must get him now while he’s available.”

Klopp took over the reins at Liverpool in October 2015 after the Merseyside club opted to sack Brendan Rodgers.

However, the former Borussia Dortmund coach has been unable to resolve their defensive issues despite signing 11 players since his appointment.

Liverpool haven’t won the Premier League title but finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
