West Ham manager Slaven Bilic praised his side for a "top performance" after going back to basics in their 2-0 win against Huddersfield Town at London Stadium.

The Hammers had lost all three of their opening Premier League games away from home before Monday night's return to east London to put Bilic under pressure.

However, Bilic's side controlled the game throughout and were afforded some luck when Pedro Obiang’s shot took a huge deflection to break the deadlock 73 minutes in.

Having taken the lead for the first time this season, the hosts doubled their tally five minutes later when Andre Ayew poked home from a goal-mouth scramble.

"I told the guys even if we didn’t win, I would have told them well done they gave everything," said Bilic, who was celebrating his 49th birthday.

"Top performance from us, not in the sense we played beautiful football, but a top performance in being on the front foot in determination in executing the game plan.

"By playing the way we did in the first half we stopped them creating anything which gives you confidence and gets them down.

"A lot of things were happening in the first half in and around their box, crosses and free-kicks, but we didn’t score in that situation.

"We provoked the luck that goal bought us back in a zone of extra energy and happiness. The boys showed everything that we asked of them.

"This was a good [birthday] present to be fair."

With a first win of the season now in the bag the Bilic, who had been under mounting pressure ahead of the game, can take his side to West Brom this weekend with a spring in their step.
