Since the firing of Ronald Koeman and just before the hiring of Sam Allardyce, Everton have been enjoying something of a renaissance as a club. Once struggling their way down towards the relegation zone, Everton have gone on a six-match unbeaten run in all competitions, winning five games in that span, and with the Toffees hosting a Chelsea side that’s been a little uneven of late, their fans will be hoping for a signature win to really get their season moving in the right direction.

Everton currently sit in ninth place in the Premier League table, having pulled themselves well into a safe place in the standings and closing the gap on the top four to just ten points coming into this match. They’ve been a much more solid side of late than the scattered, aimless, disorganized team that struggled their way through the first several months of the campaign before Koeman’s firing, and this more organized approach Allardyce has implemented suits the players at hand much better. They’ve even seen something of a resurgence in goalscoring form from Wayne Rooney, who has scored in four of his last five matches in all competitions, including a hat trick against West Ham in November.

Chelsea are sitting solidly in third place in the table, but their form has rather flattened of late. They’ve won three in a row in all competitions, but their performances have been rather listless, and they had to pull out their League Cup win over Bournemouth at midweek in stoppage time. Chelsea have had issues breaking down more organized sides like Everton have been, but they’re going to need to figure out how if they’re going to get all three points in this match and at least try to keep falling completely out of any hope of a title race with Manchester City starting to run away at the top of the table.
