After being inducted to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame over the summer, former NBA great Tracy McGrady will rejoin the Orlando Magic as a special adviser to CEO Alex Martins, the team announced Friday afternoon. He is expected to assist players and coaches, as well as help with the promotion, marketing, and community relations of Orlando’s G League affiliate Lakeland Magic team.

“I am thrilled to be back where I truly made a name for myself - with the Orlando Magic,” McGrady said in the Magic’s statement. “The DeVos family and the entire organization have always done everything in a first-class manner and I am excited to be able to help them with whatever they may need.”

McGrady started his career in Toronto but joined the Magic in the 2000 NBA free agency. There, he blossomed into one of the league’s most dynamic talents, winning the 2001 Most Improved Player award and back-to-back scoring titles in 2003 and 2004.

In the 2002-03 season, McGrady averaged 32 points per game on 38.6 percent three-point shooting and 45.7 percent shooting from the field. No active NBA player has averaged more points in a single season than McGrady, and Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant are the only players to post a higher mark this century.

McGrady figures to be a wealth of knowledge and experience for Orlando’s young core, which includes Aaron Gordon, explosive guard Terrence Ross, Mario Hezonja, and rookie Jonathan Isaac. He will also be a resource for a Magic front office that hasn’t guided its team past .500 since the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season.
