West Ham United hope to confirm the shock signing of Patrice Evra until the end of the season.
David Moyes has moved for the ex-Manchester United left back, 36, with Arthur Masuaku serving a six-game ban for spitting.
Evra is a free agent after being sacked by Marseille for kicking a fan in the head in November. He later insisted the fan had been abusing him from the stands.
He was banned by UEFA from playing in their competitions — the Champions League and Europa League — until June 2018, but is allowed to take part in domestic fixtures.
He was also fined €10,000 (£8,829) for his conduct ahead of a Europa League game against Vitoria de Guimaraes.
Evra made 379 appearances and scored three goals in nine seasons with United.
He clinched five Premier League titles, the 2009 Champions League, three League Cups, five Community Shields and the Club World Cup.
His arrival at the London Stadium leaves Masuaku facing a bleak future with the Hammers unhappy with his actions in their 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Wigan last month.
West Ham have also released a statement insisting they are continuing to back Moyes, and that no decision over his future will be made past the end of the season.
"As previously stated on a number of occasions, the Club and David Moyes agreed a deal until the end of the 2017/18 season, at which point both parties will sit down and discuss the future.
"Until then, the Board and David Moyes will continue to work closely together with the Manager having full responsibility of footballing matters and the full support of the Board. Everyone’s sole focus is on trying to achieve results for West Ham United."
