'There is no way this guy will win a championship medal' - Eamon Dunphy's damning verdict on Man United's record signing

United's £89m club record signing Pogba was dropped by manager Jose Mourinho for Saturday's game against Huddersfield at Old Trafford, after his woeful performance in the 2-0 draw against Tottenham last Wednesday put his place in the team under pressure.

With new signing Alexis Sanchez now playing in the attacking midfield role Pogba may consider to be his best, Dunphy suggested there should be no place for the French midfielder in the United line-up if they want to close the gap on runaway Premier League title leaders Manchester City.

"I more than anyone has questioned Pogba's ability and I don't think he has it, I don't think he has the brains to play there," declared Dunphy.

"He doesn't have the instinct to be a playmaker. I'm not sure what he is. If I had to choose between him and Juan Mata to play in midfield, I'd choose Juan Mata every time.

"Now that Sanchez is at the club, he will play in the position that is probably Pogba's best position. He faces a fight for his place. Sanchez is going to start, (Romelu) Lukaku is going to start and Pogba is an expensive luxury.

"Mourinho is trying to wake the guy up by leaving him out of the side, but I don't think Pogba is in the wake-up game. He is a modern kid, all into the media...that's him.

"There is no way this guy is going to win a championship medal in England, in my opinion. If Mourinho grasps the nettle on this Pogba issue, it will help United.

"United are not a team at the moment. They performance against Spurs last Wednesday was outrageously bad."

Dunphy also gave his verdict on the chaotic Liverpool v Tottenham game on Sunday, as contentious refereeing decisions dominated the headlines as Spurs were awarded two late penalties in front of The Kop.

"Liverpool have got brilliant forwards, but at the back they are a mess still and to go 2-1 up with a couple of minutes to go and not be able to manage the game was poor," declared Dunphy.

"Liverpool were very good in the first half and Tottenham didn't show up, but they got their act together in the second half and Liverpool let them back into the game.

It was a terrific game of football, very exciting, but it was very worrying if you were a fan of either teams for different reasons.

"Also, Klopp made some strange substitutions. He took James Milner off and put Joel Matip on, which was crazy and I think they threw the points away.

"Liverpool will be wonderful some weeks, make the blood stir, and other weeks they will lose 1-0 to Swansea."
