Mourinho confirms Fellaini had a knee injury and had to be taken off
Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini played just seven minutes of Wednesday night's Premier League game against Tottenham and now reports suggest he could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Confusion reigned as United manager Jose Mourinho replaced his Belgian international in the 70th minute of the game at Wembley, with the initial suspicion that he was taken off as some kind of punishment erased when it was confirmed he was suffering with a recurrence of a knee problem.
Mourinho famously took off Nemamja Matic during his time as Chelsea boss shortly after he deployed him as a substitute in a game against Southampton in October 2015, but the United boss was quick to confirm this was not a repeat of that incident.
"He came off because he had something in his knee," said Mourinho. "Unlucky for him and unlucky for me. He came on with enthusiasm, but he has an injury in his ligament."
Now ESPN are reporting that Fellaini could face "six to eight weeks" on the sidelines, as he prepares for scans on his swollen knee at United's Carrington training ground on Thursday.
Fellaini is expected to leave United on a free transfer at the end of this season and if he is ruled out of action until April, he may not have too much more to contribute to the club's ambitions in the Champions League, FA Cup and Premier League.
