Everton loan players recap: Dowell and Pennington shine

Everton have a number of players out on loan this season, here’s a quick recap of how they did with their respective clubs this weekend.

Brendan Galloway -

The left back looked very good charging forward for Sunderland, making inroads into the Derby County defence on a number of occasions and was easily their best player in the attacking end. That however was tempered by a shaky defensive performance as he was beaten a couple of times too, including the only goal they conceded.

Tyias Browning -

The youngster got thrown right into the mix playing alongside former Everton target Lamine Kone, and he did reasonably enough under the circumstances. Still needs plenty of seasoning though.

Kieran Dowell -

Dowell’s loan came as a surprise to many Everton fans who were expecting him to be part of the senior squad not unlike Tom Davies last season. He came on as a sub for Nottingham Forest and immediately wowed the fans of his new club, who were clamoring for him to start the next game.

He came close to scoring but his shot fizzed just wide in a 1-0 win over Milwall.

Joe Williams -

Despite having just completed his move to Barnsley, Williams has been turning heads as well with manager Paul Heckingbottom saying after their last preseason friendly that “Joe Williams [was the] only one who deserves to play next week”.

However, making his Championship debut, he pivoted a largely ineffective midfield that was easily overwhelmed by Bristol City who went up by three goals in half an hour, eventually losing 3-1.

Matthew Pennington -

Pennington started for Leeds United and was having a very decent game in the middle until he rolled his ankle jumping for a ball and landed awkwardly and had to be taken off.

Antonee Robinson -

Robinson did not get to play against Pennington as his Bolton Wanderers slipped to a thrilling 3-2 defeat to Leeds.

Henry Onyekuru -

The Nigerian wonderkid started the game against KV Oostende against Anderlecht and played a key part in only goal of the game, with Sofiane Hanni slamming home the rebound from Onyekuru’s shot.

His impressive performance led to his being named in the Belgian league team of the week.
