RB Leipzig probably won’t allow Timo Werner transfer to Everton

Earlier today, news broke that bookmakers had slashed - in half - the odds of RB Leipzig phenomenon Timo Werner linking up with Everton prior to the close of this summer’s transfer window.

Let’s be clear: despite the now relatively low cost acquisitions of Michael Keane and Jordan Pickford, the German forward would be the crown jewel of the Blues’ spending, without a doubt.

The 21 year old has several seasons of top flight experience in the Bundesliga, and recently staked a claim to a spot in the senior side for Joachim Low’s Die Mannschaft. Werner is very possibly the best striker Germany has produced since Thomas Muller.

The Leipzig player is a special talent, but coming off a 21 goal, 7 assist season would be impossibly difficult to acquire. The German club is headed into the Champions League group stages, and have recently been in the headlines for refusing to move any of their core players like Naby Keita or Emil Forsberg.

Keita did eventually receive his desired move to Liverpool - albeit next summer - but with one day left to negotiate, it’s unlikely Everton would be able to pry Leipzig’s prized possession away, even if they broke their recently-set transfer record to do so. Furthermore, if Werner continues on his current developmental trajectory, he’ll be catching the eye of clubs like Bayern Munich.

If Everton did pull a Timo Werner transfer out of their hats, though, it would represent a better replacement for Romelu Lukaku than anyone could have imagined.
