Everton turn to the Bundesliga for help on defence

As the summer transfer window nears its end, expect more and more Everton rumours to pop up. Ronald Koeman has been abundantly clear that the club’s spending is not finished, and so the Blues’ brass will be searching day and night for deals they can get over the line.

Among the needs, of course, are a starting caliber striker and versatile left sided defender. Regarding the latter, German outlet 90 Minutes is reporting that the Toffees are interested in SC Freiburg defender Marc Oliver Kempf.

The left-footed German youth international is capable of deploying at center back, left back, and even defensive midfield. Kempf played regular minutes in Poland during the U-21 European Championship, and his club contract is coming to an end.

Last season, Freiburg finished 7th in the Bundesliga, with Kempf playing in 13 of those league matches. A meniscus injury prevented him from appearing during most of the season.

Kempf has 116 senior team appearances in his career, with 17 goals and 3 assists across several divisions. Given his contract situation, and the fact that Freiburg just signed a new defender, it’s possible that Everton would be able to cut a deal for £5-10 million.

If Koeman and Steve Walsh think this is the man for the job, they need to get his signature as soon as possible. Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams have had excellent starts to the season, but they are both well on the wrong side of thirty.

The Blues’ play so far this year has indicated they may be up for a strong season. Two or three new signings would go a long way to making that happen.
