Swansea ready to reach agreement with Everton over Gylfi Sigurdsson

Is the end in sight? We just want this to be over now, don’t we?

The Gylfi Sigurdsson saga has dragged on for so long that much of the excitement about his signing has worn off and we just won’t the situation resolved one way or another.

With the new Premier League season less than two weeks away it is in the best interests of all parties to come to some sort of conclusion.

Throughout this summer Swansea have refused to budge from their £50m valuation of Sigurdsson, rejecting two bids worth £40m from Everton and Leicester and a third bid from the Toffees worth around £45m.

Last weekend Swansea boss Paul Clement said he expected some sort of firm outcome “within 48 hours”.

Then, on Monday, reports stemming from sources with the Swansea Supporters’ Trust claimed Sigurdsson had been offered a new contract in order to ward off Everton’s interest.

Now it appears Clement is priming Swansea supporters for an imminent departure.

BBC Sport Wales report that Clement expects Sigurdsson’s future to be resolved “in the next couple of days”.

Perhaps more significantly, Clement also confirmed that the Swans will accept a player-plus-cash deal for the Iceland midfielder.

Over the weekend it was reported that Everton youngster Callum Connolly could be used as a make-weight in any deal for the 27-year-old.

With Connolly valued at £5m it would push Everton’s bid close to Swansea’s £50m valuation.

In the meantime Clement has confirmed Sigurdsson won’t play any part in Swansea’s final pre-season game of the summer against Sampdoria on Saturday.

Sigurdsson has only played once this pre-season due to the uncertainty surrounding his future, meaning he has plenty of hard work ahead in order to be match-fit for the new campaign - whoever he plays for.

It is just yet another reason for this long-running saga to be resolved sooner rather than later.
