Would Everton consider selling Matthew Pennington?

That’s about all you can say about his Everton career so far.

A rumored target for multiple clubs in the Championship - Middlesbrough, Leeds United, and Hull City - Pennington is a product of the Everton Academy. However, he’s already 22 years old, and stuck behind four (five if you include Mason Holgate) better players in the center back position.

If Ronald Koeman and the Blues bring in any further defensive cover, or if the first teamers stay healthy, Pennington will never see the field this season. It’s not necessarily a knock on him, but “Matty” simply doesn’t look to have a long-term future with Everton.

Ashley Williams brings the experience. Phil Jagielka brings the leadership. Michael Keane brings the talent. Ramiro Funes Mori brings the edge, and Mason Holgate brings the potential. It is, to put it lightly, a tough position group to break into.

That’s not to say Pennington couldn’t help a team like Leeds United. He didn’t look like he was in over his head during his 7 Premier League appearances last season, but those were borne out of necessity more than anything else.

A loan deal to the Championship that includes a small sell-on clause (think Tom Cleverley to Watford) could be best for all involved.
