Big Sam won’t rule out move for star striker

Toffees boss refuses to deny reports of bid for Dortmund’s Aubameyang

Everton’s inability to sign a big-time striker during the summer transfer has been well-documented.

From Olivier Giroud having “one foot in the door” to a desperate £45 million deadline day bid for Raul Jiminez. Which ended up being lucky for the Toffees as the Benfica forward is currently without a league goal this season.

With all of the near misses on forwards, you will excuse Everton fans for being skeptical when reports of a shock January bid for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang started to trickle out.

After being previously linked with summer moves to the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea, a move to mid-table and rebuilding Everton wouldn’t seem like a logical next step for the Gabonese striker, even after a number of dust ups with the manager and an Everton-like bow out from the Champions League group stages.

After the initial rumors not only failed to die out but actually got louder, Big Sam was asked about the prospect of Aubameyang joining in the summer:

At first he deflected attention back to his current squad, noting how much more competition for minutes is coming with players getting healthy:

“Barkley, Coleman, Bolasie are not in the squad at the moment, as well as others who are a bit more long-standing. They can play major parts.

“As soon as we get those back, it gives me a greater headache on team selection.

However, when a follow up clarification question was asked, a very coy Big Sam lit the Everton twitter-verse on fire when he gave a simple one-word response:

“Possibly.”

It may not be a confirmation of interest but with reports continuing to link Everton with an effort to pick up the world-class striker, it appears the Toffees may try to make the splash they were unable to in the summer, except this time in the cold of January.

Here’s to hoping for a Winter miracle!
